The 6th annual EA2EVL Fondo will take place on Saturday, October 3rd. This non-competitive, 42-mile charity bike ride from East Aurora to Ellicottville raises funds for the development, construction, and maintenance of the 27-mile ECRT Trail between Orchard Park and Ashford, NY. The ride is open to cyclists of all skill levels with no race times or rankings.

The ride starts at 10am and while it is self-paced, the majority of riders finish around 12:30-1pm, with course open until 5pm. Bus transportation is available back to the starting line with two shuttle times at 2:30 and 4:15. It is geared toward all ages and ability levels, and e-bikes are welcome. Following the race, everyone, riders and the public alike, is invited to celebrate at the after party at the finish line at Holiday Valley.

The EA2EVL Fondo was developed by John Cimperman, owner and founder of 42 North, a craft brewery in East Aurora. “What started as a crazy idea has become a really fun, annual fundraising event,” explains John. “It’s meant to be both an awareness as well as a fundraiser for the ECRT (Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail, ecattrail.org) Trail and we figured there’s no better way to show off where the trail is going to lead than with a scenic bike ride along the route.”

Historically, the ride has averaged 400 riders per year, with this year being no exception. “We get a lot of return riders,” explains John. “Many people travel from Ohio, Canada and other areas for this ride, claiming it to be one of the most scenic rides in the region. It’s simply beautiful – the scenery of the rolling hills, the crisp warm air and the comradery of the riders. It’s really unique and something we’ve come to look forward to every year.”

The route has been the same since its inception, starting at 42 North in East Aurora, riding along 240, heading west on Route 242 into Ellicottville. “The rolling hills provide just enough challenge to make it rewarding; that final descent into Ellicottville is incredibly satisfying. It’s a fun coincidence that it’s exactly 42 miles from our start at 42 North in East Aurora, to our finish line at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville.”

John describes The Fondo as a casual, fun, ride. “It’s not competitive. Everyone gathers in good spirits and I’ve made many friends throughout the years.” The course is well-staffed with several water and refreshment stops along the way. Tom’s Pro Bike will be on site to assist rides with repairs and the course will be well marked to ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience.

Following the race, everyone, riders and the public alike, is invited to celebrate at the after party at the finish line at Holiday Valley. This year’s celebration will feature live music with Kody and Heron from Springville, craft brews from 42 North and fabulous food by Fat Bobs.  “It’s always a great party,” says John. “It is free and open to the public. We encourage the community to come down and celebrate in good spirits. It’s become an annual tradition, and really a celebration of fall. It’s my favorite time of year here in Ellicottville.” Riders are expected to start arriving at the finish line around noon, with the party anticipated to run until about 5pm. “Holiday Valley has been a great partner in this event,” explains John. “We’re incredibly grateful they allow us to finish the race there and host the afterparty.”

John remarks how the ride is a unique event to connect the two communities of East Aurora and Ellicottville. “These are two like-minded communities; they share a lot of similar vibes. They’re both destinations with an array of boutiques and restaurants. They both have character and soul. The event provides a unique opportunity to connect these communities, creating a unique, vibrant energy.”

Since it’s inception, the EA2EVL Fondo has raised over $300,000, meeting its goal of raising $50,000/year to support the Erie-Cattaraugus Rail Trial. The funds go towards opening, building and maintaining the 27-mile Rail Trail that will run from Orchard Park to Ellicottville. The trail aims at enhancing the Western New York Community by providing a place for public recreation for locals and visitors alike. “This project requires a lot of funds,” remarks John. “Not only to develop the trail, but to maintain and raise awareness of the project. It’s going to be a great asset to the area and we’re proud to support it.”

All Participants will receive a t-shirt and riders that raise over $100 in donations will also receive food and drink tickets for the afterparty. Fundraising is encouraged, with additional incentives for certain milestones. Registration is still open, but is expected to sell out.
