For area residents looking to get out of debt, strengthen their savings or develop a better plan for managing their money, Holy Name of Mary Church will host a nine-week Financial Peace University course beginning Thursday, Sept. 17.
The nationally known personal finance program developed by Dave Ramsey provides participants with a step-by-step approach to budgeting, eliminating debt, building an emergency fund, saving for retirement and creating long-term financial stability.
Classes will be held Thursdays from 6:30-8pm Sept. 17-Nov. 12 in the meeting room at Holy Name of Mary in Ellicottville.
Shannon Parker, who will host the program, first became involved with Financial Peace University after taking the course herself nearly 20 years ago. She said the experience was life-changing for her and her family and ultimately led her to begin hosting classes so others could benefit from the same financial principles.
Shannon said she was especially proud of the progress made by the seven families who participated in last year’s class. Collectively, the group eliminated its reliance on 26 credit cards and reduced total debt by nearly $63,000 during the course.
Financial Peace University is designed for people at many different stages of their financial lives. In addition to those working to eliminate debt or improve their savings, the course can be particularly useful for people nearing retirement or already retired on a fixed income. Budgeting, controlling expenses and reducing debt can become even more important as households prepare to transition from regular wages to retirement income.
The program also emphasizes communication between spouses and families, helping participants establish shared financial goals and develop a plan for reaching them.
The nine-week course combines video lessons with practical exercises and group discussion. Participants work through their own finances while learning strategies they can continue using long after the class concludes.
The cost is $75 and covers class materials and books. Fee waivers are available for anyone unable to afford the registration cost, and organizers emphasized that cost should not prevent anyone from participating.
