August ribbon cutting marked completion of long-term restoration of 1869 arts venue
and a new chapter in community revitalization.
Springville, NY – Springville Center for the Arts (SCA) hosted a ribbon cutting celebrating the completion of the latest renovation of the Carol Mongerson Theater, located within its historic 1869 former church facility in downtown Springville. The renovation marks a milestone in the organization’s ongoing role as a driver of community and economic development in Springville, with the facility now fully accessible and visitor-ready for the first time.
The project represents a major step in SCA’s 15-year effort to restore and modernize the historic building while preserving its architectural character and expanding its impact throughout the community. Renovations include new permanent theater seating, expanded backstage and dressing room space, enhanced accessibility, improved visitor amenities, gallery expansion, upgraded performance infrastructure and increased seating capacity from approximately 90 seats to as many as 120-130 seats.
The renovation was supported through a combination of public and private investment, including the M&T Charitable Foundation, The Cullen Foundation, Erie County, New York State Council on the Arts, community donors and other funding partners.
The Carol Mongerson Theater serves as the home for SCA’s year-round theater productions, concerts, educational programs, and community events. Students from Students Loving Art & Music (SLAM)’s production of Ride the Cyclone were on-site for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The production featured high school and college students representing seven area school districts and highlights the theater’s ongoing role in supporting arts education and youth engagement throughout the region (read more about this and see photos of the production in next week’s edition of The Villager.)
Beyond its role as a performance venue, the theater is part of a broader revitalization effort that has helped transform Springville through arts-based redevelopment, historic preservation, entrepreneurship and cultural tourism.
