The annual Fine Craft and Art Shows, presented by Crafts Alliance will be held July 10-12 and August 7-9 at the Chautauqua Institution from 10am-5pm. Over 70 professional craftspeople from across the United States will showcase their work, bringing unique, high-quality pieces from a wide-array of media, including ceramics, wood, metal, fibers and glass as well as two-dimensional art.
The Crafts Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and exhibiting fine crafts and art. Directors Joseph Lonzi and Amy van Osch have been involved for several years and are invested in keeping this tradition alive. The Fine Craft and Art Show at Chautauqua was started 44 years ago in 1982 to fill the need for artists in the Chautauqua region to showcase their work. “We are honored to help keep this tradition strong,” remarks Joseph.
Since its inception, the event has attracted talented local artists, but it has evolved to incorporate over 70 artists from across the country encompassing wood, metal, ceramic, fibers and glass. Each object is one-of-a-kind, with a range of prices to suit different budgets. “We have a good representation of all media,” explains Joseph. “It’s incredible that we have some artists who have been with us since the beginning. It’s a great opportunity to browse and connect with a wide range of artists from many different areas, making a more personal shopping experience.”
Every year, the Crafts Alliance presents 2 awards at both events (July and August) to distinct artists: The Circle of Excellence Award (Best in Show) and, new this year, The Lynn Lonzi Marino Award for Distinction in Jewelry. Each award has a cash prize ($500 and $250) and affords the opportunity for the Alliance to recognize artists of distinction. “It allows us to recognize and celebrate excellence in fine craft and art,” remarks Joseph. “These artisans elevate the status of these disciplines and inspire artistic growth.”

Not only is the event an incredible opportunity to browse a wide array of artists, but it allows the community to connect directly with them. “It’s a rare opportunity to meet the artists of such fine work,” remarks Joseph. “It’s inspiring to hear the story of their pieces, learn about their process and their passion for their work.” In many cases, shoppers may also commission artists for specific projects.
Many artists look forward to this event for various reasons. It provides a platform to showcase their work, builds connections with other artists and the community, and allows for relaxation and inspiration after hours. “Many artists look forward to this event at the Chatauqua Institution as a sort of vacation as well,” explains Joseph. “They showcase their art during the day, then relax and unwind with dinner or a show at the amphitheater in the evening. Chautauqua is a special place. It’s inspirational and fosters a love for the arts.”
These events serve as reminders to keep grounded and connect with art and inspiration. “As our world becomes more technology based, we find a growing sense of the need to return to the arts and the hand made, explains Joseph. “We are more digitally connected than ever before, so people are craving a balance. The arts allow us to pull back a bit and ground ourselves.”
