If you’re looking for something to do this Father’s Day weekend, consider checking out the 42nd Yassou Festival. This Greek cultural community event takes place each year on Father’s Day weekend at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church on Francis Street in Jamestown. The Yassou Festival is a lively celebration of Greek culture, featuring authentic Greek food, pastries, live Bouzouki music, and traditional dancing. It was first established in 1982 by Father Nicholas Rafael as a way to share the church’s cultural heritage and faith with the wider community, and it has been an annual event ever since.
This year, the Yassou Festival is scheduled for Friday, June 19th, from 11am-10pm and Saturday, June 20th, from 11am-9pm. An enormous main tent will be set up on the lawn in front of the church, providing seating for hundreds of attendees. As you approach the tent, the irresistible aroma of delicious Greek cuisine fills the air, tempting you to indulge in the amazing food that is the highlight of the festival.
All the Greek food is homemade by volunteers from the local Greek community. Among the delectable options available are gyro sandwiches, souvlaki skewers, spanakopita, Greek hot dogs, and Greek salad. Be sure to save room for dessert, which includes treats like baklava, rizogalo, cookies, and sweet breads. Don’t miss out on the Loukoumades sundaes, made from Greek “doughnuts” that are bite-sized fried dough balls served with scoops of ice cream and sweet toppings.
Also in the main tent, you will find an expanded boutique area that has grown over the years. This space offers a variety of cultural and religious items for you to browse and shop. You’ll discover new t-shirts and other clothing, and this year, the boutique is also

offering Father’s Day cards.
On the far side of the main tent, there is a spacious area designated for Greek dancers to showcase their cultural performances, reflecting Greek history and traditions. These traditional dances are typically performed by the youth of the community and are done in a circle, symbolizing the unbroken chain of life and honoring the cultural heritage of the Greek community. This year, the dancers will entertain the crowd to live Bouzouki music on Friday and Saturday at 1pm, 5pm and 8pm.
Outside the main tent, there is a small tent where adults can enjoy a selection of beverages, including beer, wine, and seltzers. It provides a great opportunity to mingle and chat with others in the community who have come out to enjoy the Greek festival.
Additionally in this area behind the main tent, lays the beautiful Orthodox church that has been serving the Greek community for decades. For those that are interested, the church will be open on Friday and Saturday for tours at 2pm and 4pm.
This festival is open to everyone in the community and will take place rain or shine. The admission fee is $3 per person, while children under 12 years old can enter for free. There are two admission lines, which helps ensure a smoother entry process and reduces wait times, allowing you to grab some delicious food more quickly and efficiently. If you can’t stay for the festival, you can still enjoy the Greek cuisine by getting takeout. Just inform the staff at the admission table that you are there for takeout, and you will be allowed to enter. The Yassou Festival is an amazing event that has stood the test of time, and it has become something the Jamestown community eagerly anticipates each year. This festival provides the parish with an opportunity to share the building while also allowing the Greek community to showcase their rich culture. It brings the entire community together, and it’s great to see the youth of the Greek community carrying on the cultural traditions that have been set before them.
People who attend this festival love soaking in the culture with its delicious food, entertaining dancers, and of course those amazing desserts. So, join them and enjoy the day as you immerse yourself in the Greek culture at the 42nd annual Yassou Festival.
