The Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) is hosting their annual County Hike Series this April. This organized, multi-month program is designed to help hikers complete segments of the 1,000-mile trail system and often features guided, point-to-point hikes with shuttle services. This season, the Finger Lakes Trail Conference (FLTC) brings this series to Cattaraugus County running from spring through summer to help hikers experience the trail’s diverse terrain and scenery in manageable portions.

The FLT County Hike series is one of the FLTCs longest hiking traditions. Originally launched in 1991 as the Cross-County Hike Series, the program was created to help hikers experience extended portions of the trial without the logistical challenges that often come with point-to-point hiking. Over the past 35 years, the program has assisted countless hikers in exploring the FLT, providing transportation between trailheads, organizing guided hikes, and providing materials to assist in hiking quests.

According to Lyndsie Doyle, Director of Engagement with the Finger Lakes Trail Conference, the Finger Lakes Trail offers views of some of the region’s more beautiful landscapes. “The trail connects forests, gorges, farmland and scenic ridges across New York, from Allegany State Park on the Pennsylvania border to the Catskill Mountains.” The Finger Lakes Trail expands more than 580 miles across New York State and forms part of the North Country National Scenic Trail, connecting it to a broader multi-state trail system. The one unique feature of this year’s series is that it continues where the previous year’s hikes ended. Over time, hikers who participate regularly can gradually experience the entire main FLT through this program.
In 2026, the County Hike Series arrives in Cattaraugus County, showcasing a variety of terrain and landscapes that make this portion of the FLT a favorite among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Volunteer guides will take out groups on Saturdays and/or Sundays throughout the season starting on April 18th and running through September for a total of 8 hikes. Hikes are geared toward all ages and abilities with some moderate elevation terrain, terrain, but hikers should be advised that distance ranges from 10.4-14.1 miles. Transportation is available between hiking points and a sag wagon support vehicle will be stationed at specific crossroad to assist participants with water, snacks and safety resources.
Participants can opt for all 8 hikes or select individual hikes to curate their own experience. Upon registration, participants receive an informational booklet complete with a packing list, hiking tips, and elevation guide for each hike to best prepare and plan for their excursion. “We aim to take the stress out of planning a long-distance hike,” says Lyndsie. “We want hikers to enjoy the experience without worrying about logistics or missing some of the best views and trails in the region.”
