Saturday, October 28th will mark the 8th annual Thriller Dancers flash mob performance on Monroe Street outside Villaggio. Performers of all ages from Fusion Dance Studio hit the streets decked out as their best Zombie to recreate Michael Jackson’s 1983 smash hit music video Thriller. As always, the shows are free and open to the public and will take place at 8:30 and 9:30pm.
Every year, the dancers make their performance better than the year before. “The main choreography stays true to the well-known Michael Jackson moves,” says Kelli Wagner, owner and director of Fusion Dance Studio in Buffalo, NY. “We spice it up a bit from the year before to keep things fresh.”
Kelli Wagner, former Buffalo Jill and owner/director of Fusion Dance Studio, has been organizing the choreography for the performance since its inception 8 years ago. Performers range from 7-18 years old and will comprise approximately 65 dancers, their most ever. The competitive dancers put in an average of 6 hours per week rehearsing for the month leading up to the Thriller shows.
Last year, Fusion Dance Studios invited spectators to join in the fun as they offered a tutorial of the Thriller chorus in between shows with prizes for participation. “We had a lot of fun and a lot of talented participants! The energy here in Ellicottville is awesome and it’s such a great vibe. We love performing here and getting the crowd involved,” says Kelli. The studio will again offer dance tutorials between shows this year with prizes, and bragging rights.
The Thriller performances have gained attention across the country, and even internationally with people traveling from far and wide to see the show. “Last year, a couple traveled from North Carolina to see our show. They saw us on YouTube and made the trek to Ellicottville just for the performance; we’re so flattered.” It has gained the attention of international news broadcasts as well as the Radio City Rockettes social media.
A show like this is very rare with unique choreography and crowd interaction. The costumes, the dancers, and the energy are captivating. The show has evolved over the years, and costumes get more elaborate. Kelli encourages the performers to find their ‘zombie style’ creating for diverse characters and a more interesting show. “You really need to see it to feel the excitement”, says Kelli.
Kelli’s favorite part of the event is watching the excitement of the performers. “This is the first opportunity for many of our young dancers to perform outside of a studio in front of a live audience. Watching them feel the energy and see the crowd’s reaction is awesome. It’s such a rewarding and exciting experience.”
Villaggio owners Nick and Kendra Pitillo invite everyone to keep the party going after the performance at Villaggio. They also invite families to stop down to Villaggio Saturday at 11am-1pm for their annual pumpkin painting event sponsored by Pumpkinville and Aldrich Painting. Cider and donuts will be provided. Both events are free and open to the public.
