The Joylan Theatre in Springville, NY is celebrating its 75th anniversary in a variety of wonderful ways! The theatre with Art Deco style outside and Art Moderne style inside, was reopened in March 2021 by Russ & Rebecca Pustulka. They will be presenting a free movie every month in 2024. The February movie, on the 15th, is “On The Waterfront” starring Marlon Brando.
On October 4th the very first movie shown in 1949 will be there again: the romantic film, “That Midnight Kiss”, starring Mario Lanza and Kathryn Grayson. Coincidentally, the movie marked Lanza’s first time as the leading man in a movie, and launched him into stardom in the late 40’s and 50’s. Kathryn Grayson’s incredible voice brought her leading roles in many musicals. In “Kiss”, a truck driver achieves his dream of becoming a famous singer overnight.
Animated features for kids that will soon be showing there include: “The Garfield Movie”, about the lazy, lasagna-loving cat originally featured in comic strips; “Inside Out 2”, the emotional sequel to a movie exploring kids’ emotions, and the action-packed sequel “Kung Fu Panda 4”.
Sometime soon, the action-packed, live-action movie, “Argylle” will appear on its screen. It’s about a novelist who gets caught up in real-life adventures mirroring those of the fictitious secret agent she writes about. The cast includes Henry Cavill as the James Bond-like hero of her novels, Bryce Dallas Howard as the novelist, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa, and Samuel L. Jackson (who’s also a voice actor in the Garfield movie). Last but not least, there’s a cat named Alfie (the pet of the novelist) who plays a prominent role, and who got cast because he belongs to the producer’s wife. (A clear example of NePAWtism!)
The Joylan offers movie events thoughtfully planned for children and young adults with autism and other disabilities who are sensitive to the loud noises and darkness involved with typical movie screenings. At those events, the volume is lowered, the lights are kept dimmed, and audience members are allowed to dance, sing or pace.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $6.50 for children (ages 2 to 10), Seniors (62 and up), and Matinees. For more information, go to joylantheatre.com or call (716) 794-3272. The Joylan Theatre is located at 11 West Main Street in Springville, NY. It can be rented for private events. Children at Disney movies get free trading pins.
