Staff, volunteers, and board members developed the idea and will all play roles when Prendergast Library, 509 Cherry St., presents their first-ever Haunted Library fundraiser on Saturday, October 22.
“Everything from tour guides to characters to selling refreshments, decorating the library, and cleaning up too!” says Danielle Bertolini, assistant library manager. “Characters will be in costumes, and we encourage everyone to come in costume.”
In addition to donations for the event, the library received a grant from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation to purchase supplies for this and other events, she says. The grant allowed them to purchase equipment for sound and lighting effects and a fog machine, and volunteers will help set them up. “We are also getting creative with things we have in our Makerspace.”
In addition to bringing storybook characters to life, the library tour guides will tell the history of the different cemeteries in Jamestown, including the one that was located where the library now sits. Admission fee is $1; snacks like popcorn, apple cider, and cookies can also be purchased for between $1 and $2.
“This fundraiser will go into our general operating budget, which helps support programs and outreach.”
Tickets are available at the library’s circulation desk. Let staff know if anyone needs elevator accommodation when tickets are purchased. Tours begin hourly, starting at 3pm and continuing until 9pm, with a break for staff between 6pm and 7pm. Tours last between 30 and 40 minutes. For more information or questions about the event, contact the library at 716-484-7135, ext. 258, or email reference@prendergastlibrary.org.
“Thank you to all the volunteers and the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation for the grant to support this event. We are excited and hope the community comes out.”
Leading up to the Haunted Library are two other October events. Children can get in the spirit of fall with the Prendergast Library’s Paint a Pumpkin in their Makerspace, 11-2pm on Saturday, October 8. The event is free and all ages are welcome. Supplies will be provided by the library but advance registration is recommended to assure adequate supplies. Register at the Children’s Desk in the library or call 716-484-7135, ext. 234.
They’ve also issued a challenge for writers. Write a scary story in two sentences. Create a terrifying tale in 30 words or fewer as part of their Scary Story Challenge. Stories can be submitted at the library or on their website, prendergastlibrary.org, between October 1and October 15. Select submissions will be featured on library bookmarks and on the library’s website.
