Every Wednesday in warm weather, the very popular Gentner’s Commission Market in Springville offers customers the excitement of outdoor auctions featuring ever-changing items ranging from furniture and antiques, to tools and whatever items happen to appear that week, and, auctions inside the barn, featuring animals. They range from rabbits to roosters, goats to geese and pigeons to parakeets. At one recent auction of assorted things, the items included children’s bicycles, a manual typewriter and Christmas decorations. In Spring, Summer and early Autumn, customers swarm to snap up plants in pots, planters and baskets, and browse through the rows of racks and boxes full of bargains. It has been this way since 1939.

Another reason for Gentner’s great popularity during the warmer months are its many Farmer’s Market booths, on both sides of the barn, full of seasonal fruits and vegetables ranging from cherries and berries, apples and plums, to potatoes and tomatoes (including cherry tomatoes). Not to mention its many Flea Market tables offering luxury items, such as jewelry and prints, and everyday items, such as Tupperware and t-shirts. They offer many fun opportunities to browse and look for collectibles and much more. Plus, there’s a bakery booth featuring homemade pies (apple, cherry, raspberry, and more), along with breads (including banana bread, white, dill, and raisin breads), pastries and cookies. To take a break, customers can sit at a table by a snack shack, which offers hot dogs and such.
The bargains on the racks and in the boxes include clothing and toys, kitchen and household items, and lots of other stuff. The animals available at the auctions also include sheep and lambs, calves, turkeys, ducks, guinea hens, quails, peacocks and peahens, and fertile eggs are available, too.
The stand selling spices and sauces is a spinoff of the Springville store Dilly Dallies, at 53 East Main Street. It’s got Hot Sauce, Barbeque and Wing Sauces, local Maple Syrup and seasonings, Cuba cheese, condiments, pickles, honey. Many of the items have amusing names.
