Buffalo native Terry Buchwald has been delighting audiences with his Elvis Tribute performances for over 34 years. He has earned the distinction of being named one of the top tribute artists in the United States by the Los Angeles Times and is a proud member of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame Class of 2017. Terry has been playing the in Ellicottville for 20 years, and will return again this September for the Rock and Roll weekend free concert at the Village Gazebo, Sunday September 15 at 1:30pm.
Terry was inspired by music at a young age. He played football in high school and sang in chorus. “I just did whatever I was interested in,” recalls Terry. “I was basically a singing jock, and I loved it.” His mom was a huge Elvis fan, and she introduced Terry to his music. Terry played various instruments in band in high school, and decided to dress up like Elvis on Halloween and do a show. He found that not only did he have fun, but he had a knack for it. The rest is history.
In 1991, Terry officially dedicated himself as an Elvis tribute artist. He has since performed in all 50 states, various territories and has performed at 7 Super Bowls as an opening act. “These were all incredible experiences,” remarks Terry. “Each one special in its own way.” While opening for Jefferson Starship, Terry had a moment where he looked out at the 20,000 people in the audience and realized, “Wow, they’re all here for me!? This is surreal, and incredible.”
Terry always knew he wanted to entertain, and always has fun doing it. He lived in Vegas for 4 years (during the Buffalo ‘off season’) performing as ‘The King’ in the city that never sleeps. “Vegas is incredible; the energy and The Elvis culture is just something else. Here at home, I’m a big fish in a little pond. Out there, I’m a little fish in a big pond. They’re so many Elvis impersonators on The Strip; I had a great time, learned a lot, and just enjoyed the fun atmosphere.”
After about 18 years, Terry decided to add more variety in his shows. “My mom loves Elvis, my dad loves country, and my brother loves Rock ‘n Roll. I decided to add a little something for everyone.” Currently, Terry devotes the first half of his show to The King, and the second act, after a costume change, he tributes country and rock and roll, and other artists who have influenced Elvis. He currently plays around 175 shows per year, frequenting festivals, concerts in the park, weddings and other private events.
Terry makes it a point to have fun during his shows. “If it ever gets to the point where I’m not having fun doing this, I’m done. To me, performing is about having a good time, and helping the audience have a good time.” His shows are interactive, as he aims to get the crowd on their feet, young and old. “I want everyone up, out of their chairs, dancing and having a good time. No one should be on their phones; we’re here to enjoy the music together, and celebrate!”
Terry currently plays around 175 shows per year, frequenting festivals, concerts in the park, weddings and other private events, and appreciates all shows, big and small. “Some of the most meaningful moments happen at the more intimate gatherings.” Terry frequents elder care facilities and group home settings, where he enjoys playing for a smaller crowd. “It means so much to me when I hear a nurse or family member tell me that my music has touched one of their loved ones. I love seeing the residents tap their toes and sing along; sometimes residents who’ve lost their ability to speak surprise us all by singing along. The fact that I can do that, bring joy with my music, is incredible.”
Terry’s favorite thing about performing is reaching the crowd, and spreading joy. “Music is therapeutic. It crosses generations and reaches everyone, no matter their age or situation. I love interacting with the crowd; I want to get everyone up, enjoying the moment.
Terry will be playing the Gazebo Stage in Ellicottville on Sunday, September 15th at 1:30. As always, this concert is free and open to the public. For more information on Rock and Roll weekend visit https://www.ellicottvilleny.com/ and about Terry visit https://tcbtribute.com/
