The Pulse: Derek Woods Band
Jamestown’s Wine Cellar Attracts National Artists

Spread the love

Sue Porter Ottaway

The Derek Woods Band is an award winning, Americana/Rock Band stopping in Jamestown this Saturday, November 12 at 9pm at the Wine Cellar on their current tour. They have shared the stage with legendary acts such as Jefferson Starship, Leon Russell, Allman Betts Band, Lisa Marie Presley, Rusted Root, members of the Black Crowes and more.

This band has many musical influences ranging from rock n roll to Jazz to blues and singer songwriters.

Each band member has artists from each genre that stick out to them and lend to their individual playing style that they contribute to the Derek Woods Band.

Recently returning from California on a leg of this, their “Picture Yourself Tour 2022”, we are lucky

to have them stopping in Jamestown to perform for us!

I urge you to check out their website at www. derekwoodsband.com and listen to their music on YouTube and Spotify.

The Jamestown Wine Cellar, located at 309 N. Main St. in Jamestown was opened in 1976 by Joel Peterson, father of the current manager, Joel Peterson. Before purchasing the Wine Cellar, Peterson owned the Cozy Corner and the Function Junction both in Jamestown.

Joel’s current vision is making the Wine Cellar a favorite location for his customers to meet friends, relax and enjoy some excellent live music a few nights a week. Known now for their Friday night 6-9pm live acoustic music plus often having full bands on Saturdays from 10-2am, his hope is to increase the live music and has no problem with adding touring groups on weeknights if that’s what fits into the artist’s schedules.

This past year Joel has had the Jamestown Wine Cellar remodeled, adding a beautiful stage among other upgrades.

Sitting down and talking with Joel is a breath of fresh air. He explains how passionate he is about the Wine Cellar becoming a sought-after music venue where bands are lining up to play.

One subject I asked him about was his willingness to book touring bands coming through, including Blues bands. No matter how popular a band, or how many records they have made, many are still looking for more venues to play on their way from larger venues to festivals and other shows. The Jamestown Wine Cellar is the perfect location for this with the nearby hotels and restaurants. I was so happy to hear him say he is totally on board for that and loves booking bands.

Joel’s love for live music comes naturally as he and his mother are both musicians so being “one of them”, they can totally understand the passion musicians have to play and share their music.
