Axe Throwing is a Target Sport Trending Across the Bar Scene
By Kate Bartlett
Nathan Woodruff and Kaleigh Fleischman are owners and founders of The Ratchet Hatchet in the heart of Ellicottville. Opening in July 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, they aimed to bring a fun, and different activity to the area that could be enjoyed all year round. “Amidst the hardships, we have worked very diligently to keep our doors open, and the axe’s flying. We are committed to always keeping our facility safe and enjoyable.”
Axe throwing is a target sport, similar to darts, that is trending across the bar scene. Players stand behind a foul line, typically 10-12 feet from the target, depending on the organization, and try to throw their axe into the target. Ratchet Hatchet has three bays and specializes in small group sessions of 6-8 people, or less. “Our small, professionally trained staff is here to make sure your time with us is safe yet memorable.” It is one of the very few bars where guests can throw axe. They also are one of the few places that book private sessions, meaning ranges and targets are not shared by multiple groups at once.
At Ratchet Hatchet, they book groups according to size for one hour or 30-minute sessions. All sessions are led by an axe coach who first trains the group in proper axe throwing technique and safety and then guides the group through a series of competitive and fun games. They offer a full bar serving draft and bottled beer, wine, spirits and crafted house cocktails. Their menu features flatbreads and shareable small bites with gluten free and allergy friendly options… “We are also coming out with an updated seasonal menu in the beginning of May featuring double the options of flatbreads and some refreshing summer cocktails.”
While they specialize in small groups, they are also available for private events and can host groups up to 50 people. “It’s the perfect place for corporate gatherings or large parties. The entire space can be available with full-service bar and menu options.” They also have open-throw on Thursday nights from 5-7pm for $10 a person. Guests can stop in, or make reservations online. Although, you don’t need to throw to go. “We always appreciate an audience. Anyone is welcome to stop in and watch, enjoy a drink or grab a bite to eat while they watch the action.”
Kaleigh and Nathan love working with and hosting the people in Ellicottville. “We love seeing familiar faces. The local support is awesome. It’s because of them we’re still here! We love that so many people choose to spend their special moments like proposals, bachelorettes, and birthdays with us. Being able to make these “once in a lifetime” experiences that much more memorable is what we are all about. We have a great staff that takes great pride and passion in making everyone’s experience here – axe throwing or not, memorable and enjoyable.”
