The Roycroft Inn
Artisan Beauty in East Aurora

Spread the love

The Roycroft Inn and Campus is arguably one of the best-preserved complex of buildings devoted to craftsmanship and philosophy in the United States. During the late 19th century, this ‘guild’ community was and remains centered around The Roycroft way of life: learning, trade, and enrichment.  The Campus contains 9 of the original 14 structures including the Inn, the Chapel, the Print Shop, the Furniture Shop and the Copper Shop.

From the moment you enter the Campus and arrive at the Inn, you are immersed in the beauty and unique style of the Roycroft artisans. As you step through the grand doors time still seems to stand still, at least for a minute. History and Art surround you at every corner.

The Roycroft Campus in East Aurora is steeped in history. Visitors are offered a glimpse at the Roycroft way of life and its story as it began in 1897. Elbert Hubbard, legendary man of vision, founded the American Arts and Crafts Movement in East Aurora, NY. In 1905 the Roycroft Inn was opened to accommodate visitors and artisans looking to experience this emerging community and style. The Inn became a center of activity for this community. In 1986, The Roycroft Inn, as part of the Roycroft Campus, received National Historic Landmark status.

Dan Garvey is the current Innkeeper at The Roycroft Inn, and has been with the Roycroft since 1995 when the Inn was fully restored. “The Roycroft Inn has multi-faceted programming and is accessible for everyone. While you soak in the beauty of our Inn, you can enjoy the amazing comfort of our hotel and the delightful offerings from our menu.”

Much time and effort has gone into preserving the rich history and timeless beauty of The Roycroft. Over a nine-year period, with support from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation, The Inn meticulously underwent an $8 million dollar restoration to return it to its original splendor. It was re-opened for guests in 1995. Dan and his staff have been proud to welcome guests of this historic Inn ever since.

Today, The Roycroft Inn continues to welcome visitors and be the center of the many community activities. It offers its guests a beautiful destination for an overnight stay, a special dining experience or both.

Moreover, there are innumerable events, shows, and activities that take place at The Inn and on The Campus that are available year-round for everyone to enjoy.  “We have designed these events so that they will encompass and include the entire community”, says Dan. “Events such as art shows, beer/wine dinners, museum tours, croquet on the lawn, live music series, and many other ways to celebrate our historic campus.”

Dan has been in the hospitality business for 43 years and loves his current role with The Roycroft. “It is truly an honor to be a part of this amazing landmark, but working with this amazing group of people is the most gratifying part of my job. The teams’ dedication to making The Roycroft Inn the very best in hospitality is incredibly rewarding.  Equal to that are the guests who come in and experience that hospitality spirit. Their visit becomes a part of history.

A visit to The Roycroft Inn is more than just a step into history.  “Our overnight packages are offered year-round so people may experience the elegance of a 5-Diamond luxury stay at the Inn, dine in one of our elegant dining rooms and also take in all the charm that East Aurora has to offer. Plus, the Roycroft campus has two museums, art galleries and simply the peace and quiet of enjoying a glass of wine on the outdoor peristyle.”

Dan invites locals and visitors alike to visit the campus for an afternoon, overnight, or extended getaway. “The Roycroft Inn and Campus is an unique experience that is available to everyone in our region.  It is the perfect way to “Be a Tourist in your own Backyard! There is only one Roycroft in the world, a National Landmark, and it’s right here in Western New York.”
