The Ellicottville Depot (6094 US-219, across from Holiday Valley Resort) recently came under new ownership by The Crook family, owners of the renowned Bar-Bill Tavern in East Aurora. The restaurant will keep its name and its appearance, serving a blend of customer favorites from both venues including pizza and wings. The new owners plan to open this ski season, likely in December.
Bar-Bill has been a family owned and operated tavern in East Aurora since its inception in 1967. When it first opened, by Barb and Bill Korzelius (hence the name, Bar-Bill) it was known as a biker bar, and only served Beef on Weck. “My mom’s Uncle Joe purchased the restaurant in 1977,” explains John Crook, one of the current owners of Bar-Bill. “He expanded the food menu and put us on the map for our chicken wings.” In 2011, John’s family (mother Katie, father Clark and brother Harrison) purchased the restaurant, and expanded to a second location in 2019. “It has always been a family run tavern, and we’re proud to keep the tradition alive,” says John. They opened another concept restaurant in 2014, 189 Burger, specializing in burgers and cocktails in East Aurora. (We also opened a third location in Rochester, NY in 2023)
Recently, the Crook family was approached by Holiday Valley about taking ownership of The Ellicottville Depot. The Depot was a beloved family restaurant in Ellicottville known for its iconic charm, community spirit and variety of dining options. Locals and visitors alike enjoy their hearty pizza and wings and eclectic décor. “We are thrilled to keep the legacy of The Depot alive,” says John. “It’s a great fit for our family of restaurants.”

The new owners intend to keep the interior almost exactly the same to the original Depot decor. “We purchased the entire contents of the restaurant,” explains John. “Everything will look very familiar to returning customers. The only changes we intend on making are kitchen updates and improving infrastructure.”
The menu will be a blend of The Depot and Bar-Bill favorites, featuring pizzas, wings, and other customer favorites along with a full bar. “We intend to keep a similar feel to our other restaurants, making some of our menu favorites more accessible to this area.” The outdoor space features a large deck, allowing the opportunity for outdoor drinks and dining across from the slopes. “It’s the perfect après ski atmosphere.”
John and his family are excited to be a part of the Ellicottville community. “Everything has been incredible,” remarks John. “We’ve been so warmly welcomed; everyone has been very supportive. Those we’ve talked to seem happy to hear that we’re keeping The Depot the same. We’re looking forward to keeping it’s legacy alive and being a part of the Ellicottville community.”
