Zoomagination Lantern Festival returns to the Buffalo Zoo this summer with over 40 lantern displays through October 5th. This year features North American wildlife and traditional Chinese lanterns, as well as new prehistoric-themed dinosaur displays.
The festival started 4 years ago at the Buffalo Zoo as lantern festivals became a popular attraction around the country. “We’re always looking to bring new opportunities to our guests,” says Christian Dobosiewicz, Marketing and Public Relations Manager for the Buffalo Zoo. “We’d heard of other venues around the country doing lantern festivals with great success, so we decided to bring this experience to the zoo.”
Zoomagination has been a great success, and is entering its 4th season. “Each year features different lanterns following a certain theme, so it’s always a new experience for our guests,” explains Christian. This year follows 3 themes: dinosaurs, North American Animals and traditional Chinese lanterns. Many of the displays are interactive and immersive, including light floors and tunnels, swings, and even animatronic shows.
Guests are invited after zoo hours to stroll through magical illuminated trails, discover interactive exhibits and indulge in themed food and drinks along the way. “It’s a unique experience to walk the grounds after closing,” explains Christian. “Many of the animals are still out, and it’s a great opportunity to view them at a different time of day.”
During Zoomagination hours, concession stands will be open with a specialty menu for food and drinks, offering both craft cocktails, mocktails and their Zoo Brew. The Buffalo Zoo partnered with Rusty Nickel Brewing to create this brew, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the zoo.
The festival is great for all ages, and is very family oriented. “We invite everyone out to experience Zoomagination,” says Christian. “Not only is it great for families, but it also makes a great date night. It’s currently the only Lantern Festival in Western New York, making a unique and fun experience. The lanterns change every year, so it’s something you can do year after year, making new memories each and every time.”
Zoomagination runs Wednesday-Sunday evenings through August (closed Monday and Tuesday), Thursday-Sunday through September (closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), closing October 5th. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate. For more information visit buffalozoo.org and follow on social media.
