Hertel Ave. Establishment Entices You to Open Your Imagination

Spread the love

Located inside The Monocle on Hertel Avenue, Cafe Bewilderment is one of Buffalo’s newest hidden gems. The space is inspired by the beauty of the forest and the spirit of belonging, aiming to provide a space of inclusivity and connectivity. Savor the artistry of locally sourced dishes, sip on whimsical handcrafted cocktails, and enjoy the nature of community.

Owners and founders Avery Passons and Paris Klas opened the doors to the cafe this past February after a slow opening month of coffee and pastries. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Avery’s passion is food. The duo traveled the country, living in a van with their dog, experiencing life and taking notes on their favorite restaurants and cafes. “We’d always dreamed of opening our own place,” explains Avery. “We were always researching, discussing our favorite dishes, décor, and taking notes on service models. We knew we wanted to open some sort of eatery, but we weren’t quite sure what it looked like.”

Cafe Bewilderment opened at 1235 Hertel Avenue on the lower level of The Monocle in Buffalo in February 2025, offering a variety of seasonally inspired dishes for brunch, lunch, appetizers, and creative cocktails. The aesthetics are modern, cozy and woodsy, with whimsical wallpaper and hanging plants from the walls and ceiling. The cafe aims to create a safe, welcoming space for all, to foster connectivity and provide a sense of belonging for everyone.    The pair settled in Buffalo, Paris’ hometown, near Hertel Ave. The Monocle property caught their attention, so they met with the owners, who were looking for someone to open an eatery on site. “We loved the space, and we really got along great with the owners David Brugh and Michael Poczkalski,” explains Avery. “One thing led to another, and we decided to take the leap and go into business together.”

The space inside The Monocle is like stepping into a piece of history, as the cafe is tucked inside a beautifully renovated Jewish synagogue, alongside a furniture store, barber studio, an apothecary and design studio. This hidden oasis inspires creativity and curiosity to come alive.

The menu is fresh and inspired, rotating seasonally, utilizing locally sourced ingredients to create every item. With a focus on sustainability and supporting women-owned businesses, high-end coffee is roasted by Stumptown and breads are made by Anastasia’s Bakery in North Tonawanda. Everything is curated for flavor and freshness, with inspired brunch, lunch and small bites in the evening.

What started with 3 employees 5 months ago, has flourished to include 10+ employees and a thriving establishment. “We are so grateful to be so warmly embraced by the community, and we are beyond excited to see our vision become reality,” says Avery. “We invite everyone to come in and experience the cafe, enjoy the space we’ve created and connect with community over delicious food and drinks.”
