Part II of Series

Living in the verdant hills of New York’s Southern Tier is magical. We blossom and become more in tune with ourselves by having the privilege of living in this environment with daily reminders of the healing properties of nature and trees, the wonder of wildlife, and the inspiring, rejuvenating beauty to behold at every turn. For me, I am restored by daily grounding with the sun on my shoulders, the birds, butterflies, squirrels and deer passing by as I serenely soak it all in on the special patch of lawn my husband prepares for me. Mother Nature is our best teacher.

Ellicottville’s own Brian Dunkleman (right) beat the small-town-kid odds to use
his skills in the competitive television industry landing a spot as co-host with
Ryan Seacrest (left) on American Idol. (Pictured in GQ.)

With that thought in mind, please allow me to introduce you to Dr. Christiane Northrup, the daughter of Dr. G. W. “Bill” Northrup and Edna Northrup who never stopped amazing us with her good health and endurance. From Cristiane’s Ellicottville upbringing of Adirondack back packing vacations, and skiing at age 2, (she is fond of saying that the family motto was, “If you didn’t ski, you didn’t eat”), and her mother’s desire to put truly healthy food on their table long before it was fashionable, working with Mother Nature obviously came naturally for her. For example, check out the video on her website – drnorthrup.com in which she speaks about the benefits of sunlight, not only because it feels good, but it provides the necessary Vitamin D to keep bodies going strong. She tells how sunlight can also help keep cancer at bay, protects against dementia and brain aging, asthma, cardiovascular issues and may even support fat loss. She walks the walk.

Dr. Christine Northrup: A graduate of the slopes at Holiday
Valley, ECS, Dartmouth Medical School with a Tufts residency,
Dr. Northrup shares her wisdom in countless books
and has been featured on Super Soul Sunday on OWN, The
Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today Show, NBC Nightly News….
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was born in Jamestown,
NY. He is the son of Jamestown native U.S. Senator Ellsworth
Goodell who was appointed in September 1968, as a Republican
to the United States Senate to fill the unexpired term
of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy until 1971.

We are proud that Dr. Northrup has deep educational, skiing and family roots in Ellicottville. See this from her website (click ‘about’): “Christiane Northrup is a visionary pioneer and a leading authority in the field of women’s health and wellness, which includes the unity of mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Internationally known for her empowering approach to women’s health and wellness, Dr. Northrup teaches women how to thrive at every stage of life.” A graduate of the slopes at Holiday Valley, ECS, Dartmouth Medical School with a Tufts residency, Dr. Northrup shares her wisdom in countless books and has been featured on Super Soul Sunday on OWN, The Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, The View, Rachael Ray, Good Morning America, 20/20, and The Dr. Oz Show, etc. Whew! Makes your head spin, doesn’t it?

Switching to a personage born in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, please meet NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. He is the son of Jamestown native U.S. Senator Ellsworth Goodell who was appointed in September 1968, as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy until 1971. Moving with his family from Jamestown, Roger Goodell spent his high school years at Westchester County’s Bronxville High School where he was a three-sport contributor in football, basketball, and baseball. A knee injury changed his athletic ambitions leading to a business career in football. Taking over the Commissioner’s job in 2006 he has learned to endure the football tradition of booing the boss. Over his almost 20 years as the boss, he has overseen extensive growth for the league on its march toward a revenue target of $25 billion annually by 2027. For now, Goodell has successfully waded through the many controversies surrounding his handling of offenses, and he will surely continue to prevail until March 2027 when his present contract ends, netting him an annual salary of about $64mil a year. Not bad for a kid from Jamestown.

Back to Ellicottville, give a shoutout to Brian Dunkleman, youngest of 10 children of Les and Jane Dunkleman of Sommerville Valley road, who braved the small-town-kid odds to use his skills in the competitive television industry landing a spot as co-host with Ryan Seacrest on American Idol. He came back to Ellicottville in 2016 for a bit, spending time with his many siblings and their families, likely playing a few games of the family favorite “Murder.” While in his hometown, Brian appeared at WNY comedy clubs, and then returned to his family in LA where he continues doing stand-up comedy and television appearances.  All the best, Brian.
