This July 31-August 3rd marks the 15th annual Great Rhythm Revival Retreat at The Heron Farm and Event Center in Sherman, NY. The retreat is directed by Jim Donovan, M.Ed., drummer and founding member of Rusted Root. The weekend includes over 29 hours of interactive (elective) workshops, group and private lessons, wellness sessions, optional meal plans and a welcoming environment to build lasting relationships.

As a musician, Jim noticed he felt better after he played. “I always felt incredible after playing, especially after performances with Rusted Root,” explains Jim. “I started realizing first-hand the therapeutic benefit of creating music and decided to research it further.” After retiring from the band, Jim was hired as a professor at St. Francis University where he became involved in music research. “I learned how music supports brain health and function, and has proven to lower blood pressure,” explains Jim. “I had felt it first-hand, but the research supporting the benefits of music on health was incredible.”

Jim felt drawn to educate others on the benefit of music. He began conducting workshops in the region and sought to hold a larger workshop, a sort of retreat. “I had visited The Heron Farm performing with the band (Rusted Root) several times, and I loved it more every time. Not only it is beautiful, but it’s incredibly welcoming. It was the perfect place for this retreat.”

In 2010, Jim held the first Great Rhythm Revival Retreat in Sherman, NY on the grounds of The Heron. “My goal has always been to gather folks in a welcoming environment and to encourage everyone to create music, no matter their ability, age or background. I strive to educate regarding the therapeutic benefits of music, and appreciate music on a different level. I aim to help people become comfortable, and reframe their thinking of music.” All workshops are for all ability levels, and are beginner-friendly encompassing a wide range of topics.

The retreat kicks off on Thursday, welcoming guests locally and from great distances to gather and make connections while learning about music and overall health and wellness. Throughout the 4 days, workshops provide over 29 hours of diverse interactive classes including drumming, yoga, sound healing, movement, visual arts and writing workshops. Each course is carefully crafted for maximum enjoyment and engagement, designed for all ability levels. Guests are able to customize their journey, attending as many or as few workshops as they wish.

Meal plan options are available with a focus on locally sourced and sustainable foods. Guests are also welcome to bring their own food. On-site camping is available, as well as nearby Air B&B accommodations. “We have many return guests year after year,” explains Jim. “People are seeking to rejuvenate and revive themselves through music and connection with one another.” Attendance is capped at 300 in order to keep the event more intimate and personal.

Through the retreat, Jim aims to provide guests with tools they can take home and utilize in their everyday lives. “We strive to help people tune into their senses and their bodies, and learn tools they can use every day to help alleviate stress and improve their quality of life. Our courses are not perfection based; they aim to help people learn how to calm their nervous system and alleviate stress through various holistic modalities.”

Jim is thrilled to host the Great Rhythm Revival Retreat at The Heron Farm and Event Center. “The property is just incredible. The surroundings are incredible; to be immersed in the great outdoors on this property is the perfect way to connect with nature and our bodies. The energy at The Heron is friendly and welcoming. I’d move here if I could!”

Jim encourages everyone to learn about the therapeutic powers of music, and it’s ability to alleviate stress and improve our wellbeing. He also offers various courses in the region and online, as well as a free newsletter.
