Chautauqua is home to the new South County NFL Flag Football team playing at Southwestern Central School in Lakewood. The team has 225 registered male and female players ranging from 1st-8th grade, with 18 teams in total.

Betsy and Jordan Woleen were inspired to start an NFL Flag Football team after sharing in their daughters’ love for the sport. Both Payton (8) and Grace (10) have been playing flag football from a young age, and they found themselves driving great distances to support her. “Both girls played for the NFL team in Fredonia,” says Betsy. “They loved the experience, so we decided to bring it to our hometown of Lakewood.”
Jordan serves as Executive Director, Betsy as Community Relations and Marketing, and Patricia Eckwahl as Treasurer for the 501c3 non-for-profit South County Flag Football League. “We are looking to build up the team board, but decided to start small our first season,” says Betsy. The team has 225 registered players for their first season, and the excitement is contagious.
The NFL has provided support and guidance throughout the start-up process, and has appointed a liaison for their first season. “It’s been great working with the NFL,” says Betsy. “The process has been very smooth and organized. It’s been exciting and we’re ready to get our first season underway.”
As a part of the NFL League Experience, The South County Flag Football League held a combine that mimicked the NFL’s. “It was an opportunity to get the players on the field, and it helped us see their skills and create fair teams.” South County Flag will also hold a draft party when they announce the player’s teams. “It’s a fun process; it really builds the excitement and makes it more fun.” Prize tables are at each event, awarding necessary equipment (gloves, turf tape, mouthguards) for players.
During the season, teams will play each other on the Southwestern Central School Fields, starting June 28th for 5 consecutive weekends. “The athletic complex is top-notch,” says Betsy. “The games will be upbeat with a DJ, photographer, and excitement throughout the games. It’s the full NFL experience with touchdown dances; players have been practicing their drip.”
The League is grateful for the community support they’ve received thus far, especially the 22 community sponsors and dozens of coaches and volunteers. “We are overwhelmed by the support we’ve received, and we’re looking forward to a great first season. “We invite everyone to come out to experience NFL Flag Football, says Betsy.” Games are free and open to the public.
