The annual Mudslide mudrun awaits anyone who dares to challenge and conquer the muddy, slippery trail. What’s a mudrun? The concept of combining muddy obstacles with trail running gained popularity over the past few decades encouraging resorts like Holiday Valley to hop on the mudrun trend.

These events offered participants a unique and adventurous experience, combining the thrill of a traditional obstacle course and navigating through mud.

The concept of the mudrun came from military training courses and cross-country races that involved natural obstacles such as mud pits and water crossings. Event organizers were inspired by these courses and began creating recreational versions that catered to a wider audience.

Similar to the military courses and other running races, mudruns test peoples’ physical and mental strength. The courses encourage people to embrace the mud and not be afraid to get a little (a lot) dirty.

Each year the mudruns evolve to diversify the course and challenge the runners. New creative obstacles are introduced to curate a unique experience. The mud itself has become an integral part of the challenge, as participants navigate slippery terrain, crawl through mud pits, and trudge through deep muddy waters.

The 2023 Mudslide at Holiday Valley offers two courses to cater to different preferences and fitness levels. The first is a 3.5-mile route, mostly downhill, perfect for those who prefer a faster-paced adventure. The second option is a 5.4-mile route with challenging uphill sections, for those who want to push their limits even further.

Both courses kick off at the top of Morning Star, accessible via the Yodeler lift. From there, runners will traverse along the scenic ridge line atop Holiday Valley. Runners will pass by Spruce Lake, before circling back around the mountain to Eagle.

This picturesque route offers breathtaking views of Holiday Valley’s natural beauty. Along the courses, runners will be challenged with 15 obstacles including mud pits, cargo nets, traverse through water, slide down muddy slopes, etc.

While the Mudslide is all about fun and camaraderie, it’s also an opportunity to challenge yourself and push your limits. If you believe you have what it takes to place in the top 10, Holiday Valley encourages those to start early in your wave.

Regardless of your position, all participants will be timed and awarded a well-deserved finisher’s medal to commemorate their muddy triumph.

Remember to come prepared with appropriate attire: running shoes with good traction, comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy, an adventurous mindset and a great big smile.

So, lace up your running shoes for the 11th annual Mudslide at Holiday Valley on June 17 from 10am-3pm. Register online on the Holiday Valley website.
